“I wish you all, young and old, wherever you may be, all the fun and enjoyment, and the peace of a very happy Christmas,” was how Queen Elizabeth II ended her first televised Christmas message in 1957. The monarch’s message had been a radio-only affair since 1932, but the Queen hoped the new technology would make her message “more personal and direct”.
