“I wish you all, young and old, wherever you may be, all the fun and enjoyment, and the peace of a very happy Christmas,” was how Queen Elizabeth II ended her first televised Christmas message in 1957. The monarch’s message had been a radio-only affair since 1932, but the Queen hoped the new technology would make her message “more personal and direct”.

Whether you’ll be sat in front of the telly to watch the Queen’s Speech or not, all of us on the History Revealed team wish you a merry Christmas!
