Truce in the trenches

Christmas 1914, and World War I had raged for months already. Both soldiers and civilians were quickly coming to the realisation that this was a conflict the likes of which had never been seen before.

But on Christmas Eve, the Germans decorated their trenches with fir trees and candles and sang carols across no man’s land, which was met by the British erupting into their own Christmas songs. The next day, both British and German troops clambered out of their trenches, met their enemy and even exchanged gifts.
